LUT University – Public construction
- Architectural design: Aihio Arkkitehdit Oy
During the years 2016–2018, the main building of LUT University in Lappeenranta, specialising in technical and economic research and education, was completely overhauled. The facade of the building was partially renovated, which revealed the original brick cladding. In order to give the building a bold signature look, the new facade was constructed with Cor-Ten facade cassettes supplied by Ruukki.
Architect Piia Viitanen from Aihio Arkkitehdit notes that Cor-Ten is a genuine and straightforward material that fits the building well by respecting the old, red brick cladding of the building. Cor-Ten is honestly modern and does not attempt to emulate the old material and look. Viitanen is pleased with the project.
"I am very pleased with the support we have received from Ruukki, it facilitated our work. The best part is that the building users have been happy. I've heard students tell how amazing premises they have gotten. This kind of direct feedback makes me very happy," says Piia Viitanen.
