Ruukki commits to new sustainability target: 70% reduction in CO2 emissions from own operations by 2030

Ruukki Construction announces a new sustainability target for its own operations. We aim to achieve a 70% reduction in direct and indirect energy-related greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 & 2) from our operations by 2030 compared to 2019. The new target is in line with the Science-based Targets initiative (SBTi) and replaces the previous 25% reduction target announced in 2021.

Our years of systematic sustainability work are starting to bear fruit and we are now ready to raise the level of ambition on our journey towards sustainable growth together with our customers.

Ruukki’s new target is to reduce our own CO2 emissions (and other greenhouse gases) by 70% by 2030 compared to 2019. The target is aligned with the Science-based Targets initiative (SBTi).

"We reached our previous target well ahead of schedule. Congratulations and thanks to everyone at Ruukki for this great achievement. According to the new calculation method, we had already achieved a 56% reduction by the end of 2022 compared to the 2019 level. Central to exceeding the target has been the conversion of fossil energy sources to low-carbon or fossil-free,” says Sami Eronen, President, Ruukki Construction.

Accelerating our journey towards carbon neutrality

“We are well on our way to reaching the new target. Now that we have taken the most obvious measures, even smaller improvements in emission reductions will require extra effort going forward. However, the direction is clear: we will continue our journey towards carbon neutrality,"  Sami Eronen continues.

"We want to create a solid foundation for setting sustainability targets and monitoring progress. That’s why we have aligned our reporting and targets with the leading international standards. In the future, our customers can be absolutely sure that our environmental calculations are verifiable and comparable," says Tuovi Palojärvi, Manager, Environment and Sustainability, Ruukki Construction.

Long-term ambition: entire value chain

Although our environmental performance and reporting have already taken great strides forward, we will not be satisfied until our sustainability is top-notch.

In future, we want to expand carbon footprint calculations to cover the entire value chain (Scope 3 in Greenhouse Gas Protocol terminology) and try to reduce the chain's climate impact through our own actions.

"In the longer term, we want to raise our level of ambition. We recognize that we are only a small part of a bigger picture. As a value chain operator, we want to take our responsibility for the climate impacts of the entire chain. Going forward, we will set transparent goals for the value chain and communicate our progress," Tuovi Palojärvi concludes.
