Towards carbon-neutral buildings

Ruukki Construction has decided to be the first company to offer its customers fossil-free steel construction products, made from SSAB’s fossil-free steel. Ruukki has committed to developing its product offering to be able to help its customers reduce their carbon footprint. The goal is to work with customer partners to create a fossil-free value chain right to the end of the building’s lifecycle.

Ruukki has 60 years of experience of manufacturing quality steel roofs and solutions to create airtight walls. This is a good place from which to the set the bar at the top of the industry.

"We’ve set our ambitions high," admits Jouni Metsämäki, SVP, Roofing at Ruukki. "Our steadfast development work aims at enabling us to quickly provide construction products of fossil-free steel and to continuously improve building energy efficiency through the air-tightness of our products."

Ruukki is launching a pilot project to test the first batches of SSAB fossil-free steel and large-scale product manufacturing will start in 2026.

“We learn both construction practices and their social significance. We’re seeking partners for the pilot whose goals in terms of environmental issues and sustainability are in line with our own.”

Low-carbon construction – the big picture

One of the keys to the solution on the journey towards carbon neutrality is to consider the construction process as a whole. When the environmental footprint is minimized at each stage in the value chain, everyone wins – from the end customer to society at large.

Ruukki Construction has decided to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in its own operations by 25% by 2026. Ruukki’s approach is based on plants, including their machinery and equipment, being energy efficient and that energy is sourced from eco-friendly sources. Material waste will be minimized in production and more sustainable materials used for product packaging. Logistics will be optimized so that Ruukki is close to the customer and products are made and delivered on a just-in-time basis.

Well begun is better done

Low-carbon construction is becoming more popular with professional builders and designers and also rapidly in households. When deciding on building materials, attention should be given to the materials that better withstand time. The transition towards carbon-neutral construction will be long and take place in many stages.

Jouni Metsämäki points out that for customers, Ruukki will remain the top-quality company with a strong value base as we have learned to know it over the decades.

“Customers associate us with dependability, promptness and ease. This is what they expect and this we will not compromise on at any stage.”
