Higher durability ratings for Ruukki's color-coated GreenCoat® steels

Ruukki Construction uses color-coated GreenCoat® steels manufactured by SSAB in its construction products. These products include steel roofs, rainwater systems, load-bearing sheets and sandwich panels for building walls. The latest tests show that SSAB's bio-based GreenCoat® Pural BT matt steel now belongs to the most demanding class in terms of both UV and corrosion resistance.

Responsible construction is based on sustainable products and long-lasting buildings, and the principles of sustainable development are increasingly guiding the work of designers and architects. Authorities have published a new revision of the standard for color-coated steel products, which contains new corrosion and UV resistance classifications for best-in-class products.

The classifications under the revised standard are based on the same testing methods as earlier, but in order to get the best rating, the product must be tested twice as long. All GreenCoat® products have been certified for UV and corrosion resistance.

“Ruukki manufactures construction products from high-quality raw materials, such as GreenCoat®-coated steels. By choosing GreenCoat® products for their buildings, customers can be sure that the end result is very long-lasting and in line with the principles of sustainable development,” says Jouni Metsämäki, head of Ruukki Construction's Roofing business unit.

GreenCoat® products have a comprehensive technical and coating warranty. This means that the product will not rust and the coating will not flake, crack or peel off the surface of the product. There are also no significant changes in color. For example, GreenCoat® Pural BT matt coating has a 25-year coating warranty.

Ruukki's products made of GreenCoat® steel have an innovative coating in which a significant part of the fossil oil has been replaced by Nordic rapeseed oil. In addition to bio-based coatings, SSAB will deliver fossil-free steel from 2026 onwards. BioTechnology (BT) has been developed and patented by SSAB, of which Ruukki Construction is part.
