The Ruukki® LowCarbon product range is setting new standards in sustainable construction. The Ruukki® Classic LowCarbon roof profile, for instance, is estimated to reduce up to 70% of emissions compared to standard steel roofing profiles. Similarly, our LowCarbon sandwich panels can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional wall structures. These significant reductions are achieved without compromising on the quality or performance the customers expect.
The real-world impact of these products is exemplified by the Nrep Logicenters project in Tampere, Finland. This 30,000-square-meter logistics center will incorporate 10,000 square meters of Ruukki® LowCarbon sandwich panels made of SSAB Zero™ steel and 500 square meters of design profiles made of SSAB fossil-free steel. The result will be a building envelope with up to 50% lower climate impact, demonstrating the substantial difference that can be made through product choices. Furthermore, this project aims to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, illustrating how Ruukki® LowCarbon products can contribute to attaining prestigious environmental certifications.

Measurable progress towards sustainability
The journey towards sustainable construction is marked by tangible achievements and ambitious goals. At Ruukki, we reached a significant milestone in the end of 2024 with a 76% reduction in CO2 emissions from own operations (Scope 1 & 2) compared to 2019 levels. Building on this success, we aim to push further.
Our current target is a 70% reduction in the CO2 emissions from our own operations by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. While we have already exceeded our target, it's important to note that we expect the energy consumption to increase as the construction market rebounds and production volumes grow. This year, we will expand carbon footprint accounting to include two more plants, as some of the most recent acquired subsidiaries have not yet been in the scope. These additions will lead to a rise in our total emissions, but our baseline and targets will remain unchanged. These aren't just numbers; they represent a fundamental shift in how the construction industry approaches its environmental responsibilities.
A key factor in this progress has been the transformation from fossil energy sources to low-carbon or fossil-free ones. Currently, 9 out of our 14 production plants run on fossil-free electricity. This shift to greener energy sources significantly reduces the carbon footprint of production as well as demonstrates the feasibility of operating large-scale manufacturing facilities with fossil-free energy sources.
