Low-carbon offering

Our sustainable offering is growing fast
We are committed to making a positive impact on the environment and society through innovative products and continuous development. We are driven by four sustainability themes: Climate change, Circularity, Biodiversity and Safety & Wellbeing.
As part of our efforts to slow down climate change, we launched a new product range in May 2024. The Ruukki® LowCarbon product range includes high-quality construction products made of recycled SSAB Zero™ steel with a bio-based GreenCoat color-coating. The products are manufactured close to the customers in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Poland using fossil-free electricity and delivered in optimized packaging that is transported with minimized emissions. The product range, which includes high-quality premium products, will gradually expand to all Ruukki product groups and, in the future, also to SSAB Fossil-free™ steel products.

Our products can help reduce your building's carbon footprint
In our sustainable offering in particular, we choose low-carbon alternatives of raw materials, such as SSAB Zero and Fossil-free steel, whenever possible, and collaborate with e.g. insulation suppliers to develop more sustainable offering. Our solutions also help to reduce the emissions during the life-time of the building through, e.g. building integrated solar solutions and our airtight envelope solutions.
Our plants are energy and resource efficient, and continuous improvement and safety are at the core of our operations. We optimize the use of packaging materials and strive to transport our products with lower emissions.

Two new unique steels pave the way
Utilizing next generation recycled steel
As part of SSAB, we are taking the next step towards a more sustainable future, with the world’s first emission-free steel of its kind. SSAB Zero is made of recycled steel and produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas – resulting in steel with virtually no fossil carbon emissions. Our first building products made of SSAB Zero will be available gradually from spring 2024. First, we will introduce new SSAB Zero steel to our premium products, which have high sustainability performance already today.
World's first buildings made of fossil-free steel are a reality
SSAB Fossil-free™ steel is produced using the revolutionary HYBRIT® technology, which replaces coal in the iron ore reduction process with hydrogen. The result is a removal of the fossil carbon emissions. With the change, our parent company SSAB's aims to reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by 10 % and Finland’s by 7 %.
Fossil free steel-based building products will be available in the Ruukki® LowCarbon portfolio in the future. World’s first fossil-free steel building pilots were realized for Peab in Sweden and for Honkarakenne in Finland in autumn 2023.
Circularity & material efficiency

Embracing a circular economy
Our products are crafted with high recycled content, e.g. Ruukki® Life Panel, and designed for optimal reuse and recyclability. Thanks to premium steel and coatings, our steel-based building products are long-lasting and require minimal maintenance. The long service life reduces the use of new materials, which helps save natural resources and reduce emissions. Steel is a 100% recyclable material, which allows it to be recycled continuously without loss of performance from product to product. Our first-class coating solutions with product warranty guarantee a long service life with minimized maintenance needs, and some are even maintenance-free, such as the Ruukki®Patina Panel.

Promoting a healthier ecosystem
Preserving biodiversity is crucial for the future of our planet. We aim to develop our approach towards biodiversity in our operations. We work to minimize use of plastics in our packaging. Additionally, for example, in Poland, we have introduced insect hotels and bird feeding stations to our premises.
An example from our product portfolio is our green roof solution, which is not only enhancing urban landscapes, but also provides habitants for various flora and fauna, promoting a healthier ecosystem.

Our commitment

Towards carbon-neutral building products
At Ruukki, we work to make our steel-based building products the best in every aspect, including sustainability. We can have the greatest impact on carbon emissions through our offering and through emissions reductions in our operations. By 2030, we aim to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by compared to 2019. The target is aligned with the Science-based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Sustainable offering
Our products contribute to energy efficiency. Through energy savings from our airtight building envelopes, we save up to 30% of the energy used and carbon released during the lifespan of a building. This helps customers to achieve high ratings in environmental certification systems for buildings, such as LEED and BREEAM.

Responsible partner
Under the sustainability theme, other topics besides carbon emission reduction measures are important to make Ruukki a responsible partner:
We want to be the safest company in the construction products industry. Offering safer solutions to all stakeholders throughout the supply chain, Ruukki aims to be the safest place to work in the construction industry.

Sustainable operations
We continuously improve our operations to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. We will continue the transition to fossil-free energy and reduce the amount of waste and the use of plastics. By 2030, our goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our own operations (Scope 1 & 2 in Greenhouse Gas Protocol terminology) by 70%. We are also optimizing our logistics. Our goal is to be as close to our customers as possible with local production in order to reduce the need for transportation and related emissions.
