EPDs confirm a significantly smaller carbon footprint
Ruukki Construction has published two verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for its Ruukki® LowCarbon product family. The new declarations cover color-coated and hot-dip galvanized building products, such as roofing sheets, load-bearing profiles, and façades. They complete the EPD portfolio for the Ruukki LowCarbon product family: EPDs for sandwich panels were published earlier this year, and now the declarations cover the entire product range.
The new EPDs confirm that Ruukki LowCarbon products have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than products made from standard steel. For color-coated products, the carbon footprint is 58 percent lower, and for hot-dip galvanized products, 68 percent lower. For sandwich panels, the reduction is up to 50 percent.
The smaller footprint results from the use of recycled-based SSAB Zero™ steel and Ruukki’s energy-efficient manufacturing processes. Both the steelmaking and product manufacturing processes are powered by fossil-free electricity and biofuels. Ruukki® LowCarbon sandwich panels utilize low-carbon mineral wool insulation, while Ruukki® Life panels incorporate wool with a high recycled content.
– Low-carbon construction is no longer the future – it is today. Reliable and transparent data, such as EPDs, are essential in enabling sustainable choices, says Jyrki Kesti, Sustainability and Technology Manager, Ruukki Construction.
Towards net zero
The Ruukki® LowCarbon product family is a key part of Ruukki’s sustainability strategy, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of building products across the entire value chain. In autumn 2025, Ruukki expanded its climate targets to cover all emission sources (Scope 1, 2, and 3) and set the targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative: reducing its own operations’ emissions by 85 percent and value chain emissions by 40 percent by 2035, with the target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2045.
