Honka Kömmeli is a modern log home built for the Oulu Housing Fair, drawing inspiration from traditional architecture with its classic Falun red tone and numerous eye-catching details. The homes showcased at the Housing Fair, held in the Hartaanselänranta area in Oulu, Finland from July 18 to August 17, 2025, are pilot buildings for climate-smart construction. Protecting this ecological and low-carbon Honka log house is the Ruukki Classic® LowCarbon roof, made of fossil-free steel, with a carbon footprint up to 60% smaller than that of a standard roof.
Designed especially for first-time home builders Emma and Lassi, Honka Kömmeli combines a modern form with influences from the coastal region’s traditional building styles and red ochre color scheme. The couple made their material choices with an emphasis on natural materials and low emissions—pine is a central element throughout the building, in both fixed furnishings and furniture. A striking feature of the home is a two-story sauna, inspired by age-old Finnish loft saunas, offering a ceremonial sauna experience.
One of the main themes of the 2025 Housing Fair is carbon-smart homes, reflected in the choice of building materials, smart home technologies, and more sustainable construction processes. Honka log homes are built from high-quality, certified Finnish wood with minimal knots. Honka’s new Fusion+ CLT log, launched in May 2025, enables a modern and refined look with its subtle groove and non-settling properties.
The Ruukki® Classic LowCarbon roof is a natural fit for this healthy, ecological and low-carbon log home. It supports the goals of sustainable construction and strengthens the climate-friendly character of Honka Kömmeli.
