Power of digitalization in the changing world

While the world has reached a turning point, we should be standing strong and keep building a brighter future. The last several days have shown us that, in the face of humanitarian disaster, innovators can use their potential to deliver what is needed in these tough times – hope and help. But not just any help – solutions that unprecedentedly influence the safety of life and economics.

The growing importance of BIM technology in the AEC Industry

Humanity is incredible. In harsh conditions, we can concentrate our forces on developing innovative ideas, plans and projects. Although we are facing a drastic shift in our everyday lives, we definitely observe the strength of cybernetics and digitalization. There are many initiatives emerging to support the changes taking place before our eyes. In the construction industry, we also have enormous potential for innovations.

Outside the box thinking allowed us to create a new model of the design & construction process. BIM – Building Information Modelling or Building Information Management was developed decades ago but still has astonishing potential and is gaining enthusiasts all over the world. It may seem contradictory, but the simplicity of the rules that characterize BIM accelerated the process, allowing us to conduct even the most complicated industrial, pharmaceutical or military facility projects with extraordinary results by the end of the construction process.

Being an innovation enthusiast, interested in changes in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, I am following annual buildingSMART International awards, treating them as a “compass” of technological trends. The results usually reflect which areas are most covered by an innovative approach. The latest list of winners shows that many high-budget public building designs and infrastructure projects are powered by a professional BIM process, which is quite a great contrast to the private sector, where BIM usage is more rare. That means not less that governments are the strongest BIM advocates. Very often it is pointed out that clear processes provided by using BIM in the projects provides an incredible advantage for budget control and transparency from the earliest stages.

BIM implementation programs and standards

European countries are now more eager to require following mature BIM processes for public building projects. The strong support for a change in the AEC sector is possible due to many governmental programs encouraging developers, architects and general contractors to change their approach to work.

In the process of building a component production industry, there are changes taking place as well. Manufacturers who follow trends in construction are investing heavily in their BIM model libraries. It is an interesting area with a lot left to be discovered. After all, building components are the elements which create the model of the building – in reality and in the digital world. The importance of data included in the component may be invaluable. In the end, information about the product will be counted as part of the bill of materials, the cost estimation or the sustainability parameters of the building. Properly used, it could be an asset in the facility management systems.

BIM in Ruukki – our challenges and goals

Ruukki has been supporting modern technologies for years and now we are moving to the next stage of the BIM implementation program in our organization. With the primary goal in mind – to better serve our customers – we are set to release an updated version of the Ruukki Building Envelopes BIM library based on current BIM standard requirements, trends and a feedback from our clients.

Talented colleagues in Ruukki technical teams - the core of our customer service - will continue supporting us with helpful information about Building Envelopes products and detailed drawings, even for the most challenging designs.

What’s next for us?

Interesting projects are lined up for this year at Ruukki and it is going to be an exciting phase for us. Keep in mind, BIM is not only a methodology that helps to improve information exchange during the investment process, but also influences our approach to work - it dares us to be more open-minded, creative and conscientious.

While others choose to destroy, we are building tomorrow. The Ruukki slogan stays current. That is why we would like to bring our customers and clients into an effective cooperation with the feedback on the solutions we provide. After all, we are changing for you.
