Ruukki uses GreenCoat TSP Legacy from SSAB to speed up roof renovation
In Kristiinankaupunki, on the west coast of Finland, a complex of three buildings was given a new lease of life. The building renovated last dates back to 1852 and it houses three residential properties. Now this building is protected against the elements by a roof made with GreenCoat TSP Legacy color coated steel. Designed especially for the renovation of roofs of culturally and historically significant buildings, GreenCoat TSP Legacy is a tinsmith steel product that can be worked on and folded onsite.
With its old wooden houses, the centre of Kristiinankaupunki is an idyllic sight. These houses include a newly renovated complex of three buildings that sit in park-like surroundings and overlook the sea. While the renovation of old buildings takes time and effort, meticulously performed work produces stunning results.
‘The whole building complex and the yard are protected, which influences the performance of any renovation. We worked with the authorities to determine the matters that had to be considered in the renovation and found out that only galvanised metal sheets could be used,’ explains Erkki Päkkilä, the owner of the historical buildings.
The use of galvanised roofing sheets imposes certain restrictions; for example, galvanised steel can typically only be painted a couple of years after installation. Thanks to the primer coating applied at the factory, Ruukki chose GreenCoat TSP Legacy that can be painted immediately after installation.
‘The result was a traditional-looking standing seam roof, where the handcrafted nature of the structure is clearly visible; after all it was made with chisels and hammers, traditional tinsmith’s tools. The contractor, Ilmajoen Kattomestarit, produced top-notch work. The roof has been painted with matt paint and it is already all finished,’ says Erkki Päkkilä, pleased with the results.
The renovation project in Kristiinankaupunki was carried out in a way that shows respect to the buildings’ history while making use of modern techniques. Even the brand-new roof blends in with the historical surroundings.
GreenCoat color coated steel speeds up work onsite
GreenCoat TSP Legacy is a product for tinsmith applications where the roof will be painted onsite after installation. In addition to the renovation of culturally and historically important buildings, it is suitable for new-builds.
There is clear demand for factory-primed roofing sheets as the treatment of galvanised metal roofs onsite is laborious and time-consuming. Whereas traditionally metal roofing could only be painted after weathering, washing typically suffices for the new roofs made of GreenCoat TSP Legacy.
‘The two coats of primer given to the roofs at the factory protect them against corrosion. Once the roof has been painted after installation, it offers a long service life. Paint sticks well to the slightly rough primer surface and usually the roof only requires a single layer of paint onsite. In addition, it should be noted that the primer surface offers some friction, which improves safety when fitters have to move on the roof,’ explains Risto Sipilä, Ruukki’s research and development manager.
The same methods and tools can be used for the installation of the roof as for ordinary galvanised roofs. Non-drying lap sealing oils should not be used for installation as traces of them often remain on the roof, weakening the adhesion of paint.
Developed by SSAB, GreenCoat TSP Legacy (TSP = Tinsmith Pro) is a 0.6 mm thick product, which is available in several widths. Ruukki has carefully tested numerous paints that are recommended for use when a GreenCoat TSP Legacy steel roof is painted on the installation site.
