Ruukki commits to #BuildingLife principles

#BuildingLife is a Europe-wide action program for a carbon-neutral built environment. The program’s supporters commit to work towards a carbon-neutral built environment by 2035 in accordance with the common goals of the real estate and construction industry. As a steel-based building products provider, Ruukki is involved in reducing the environmental impact of construction and takes care of the environmental efficiency of its products throughout their entire life cycle.

"The #BuildingLife commitment fits our sustainability goals perfectly. For years, we have been systematically working to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of our operations. In addition, we are developing our products to ensure that their life cycle impact will be as close to carbon-neutral as possible," says Sami Eronen, President of Ruukki Construction.

Compared to 2019, Ruukki plans to reduce its own carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2026.

"We take into account all activities related to manufacturing, but also the environmental impacts during the entire life cycle of our products. We improve all aspects of our operations and develop products that both promote the wellbeing of people and create a sustainable environment," Sami Eronen continues.

Life cycle approach covers the entire chain from raw material procurement to product recyclability.

"We are constantly developing new products and already offer, for example, energy-efficient airtightness solutions for buildings, in which the life cycle effects of the products have been optimized. The optimization covers not only the material choices but also improvements in the product's performance properties. Real estate investors and contractors can significantly influence the carbon footprint of their buildings with their own choices," Sami Eronen continues.

Journey towards carbon-neutral building products

Ruukki intends to be the first company to introduce roof and wall building products made of fossil-free steel to the market by 2026. Changing the energy-intensive raw material to a fossil-free one reduces the life cycle emissions of products by up to 85 percent.

"The work to achieve a carbon-neutral future requires everyone’s involvement, and as a company we commit to developing our business and products to achieve the goal," Sami Eronen concludes.
