An elegant Ruukki roof and solar power solution in the same package

Ruukki’s roofing customers in Finland and the Baltic countries now have the option to complement their roofs with new solar power solutions. Anna Talas, Director of New Businesses, explains the offering and why the customer should choose solar power solutions integrated with Ruukki roof.

Why invest in solar power?

Renewable energy and self-sufficiency in energy production are important themes not only at an individual level, but also socially. Solar power is clean energy, and by utilizing it we can slow global warming. The European Commission’s REPowerEU initiative aims to increase renewable energy production and clean energy solutions in Member States. As a result, solar power solutions will become more common on the roof of both new and renovated buildings as recommendations for them increase.

By investing in solar power, households can take care of their energy self-sufficiency and reduce their own carbon footprint. At the same time, we can also contribute to achieving a greener future and common climate goals nationally and more widely as part of Europe.

What solutions are available for those interested in solar power and Ruukki roofs?

In co-operation with our partners we offer new and unique integrated solar roofs that not only function as a structural part of the building, but also produce renewable energy. The solar roof integrates our partner Roofit.Solar’s solar power plant elegantly and discreetly into the Ruukki Classic roof, combining Nordic design and top-quality steel with green electricity. You no longer have to compromise on the beauty of your home for cleaner energy or energy independence. In addition to the integrated solution, Ruukki’s installation partners in Finland also offer top-mounted solar panels that can be installed on Ruukki roofs.

Why does our partner implement the solar roofs?

Long-term partnerships are an important part of how we work. It enables the best solutions for each customer’s needs. When it comes to solar roofs, we have chosen Roofit.Solar as our partner, because we share a common vision and desire to influence the future of construction with sustainable solutions that do not require compromises on the aesthetics of the home. We also work with expert installation partners that have plenty of experience not only in roof installation but also in solar power solutions. This way we can provide households with an easy turnkey solution.

What benefits does the customer get when choosing a solar roof from Ruukki?

The solar roof is an aesthetic choice that perfectly blends into its surroundings. In addition to a durable and high-quality roof, the customer gets a power plant that is 100% weatherproof. The roof is designed to withstand increasing extreme weather conditions, such as hailstorms.

The installation is done as a turnkey solution. The consumer does not need to familiarize themselves with the technical details. Instead, they receive a solution suitable for their needs, planned and implemented by our installation partners.

What else is Ruukki doing to promote sustainable construction?

For years, we have invested in improving our operations so that the carbon footprint of our products is as small as possible. We develop our processes and use renewable energy such as green electricity and biofuels in manufacturing and transportation where possible. We minimize production waste and packaging materials and work with partners to optimize material choices.

We use sustainable raw materials that are as low-emission as possible. Ruukki is in the front line of piloting the most low-emission steel grades, and we have already made the world’s first construction products from SSAB’s fossil-free steel. In 2026, the raw material entering the market will be piloted this autumn with selected customers. We will also soon be piloting SSAB’s Zero™ steel based on recycled steel, and we intend to be the first to launch state-of-the-art recycled steel products on the market in 2024.

When designing products, we take into account the emissions over the entire life cycle of the product and provide up-to-date Environmental Product Declarations (EDP) to support carbon footprint calculations.
