Mari Paalanen-Taskinen is a fourth-generation retailer with a retailing family history in Voikkaa near Kouvola dating back more than a century. She took over the running of K-market Woikantori on her mother’s retirement in 2008. The convenience store has been operating in the existing K-market Woikantori premises since 1983. In late 2017, the store was given a facelift.
“The pale walls had already seen better days. The paint was flaking and the walls had been knocked. It was high time for a makeover,” says Mari Paalanen-Taskinen.
“I think I came up with the idea of renovating the façade at the same time as we gave the store a new look. It was great that somebody was listening and the matter went ahead,” she adds.
Petri Bergman, Real Estate Manager at Kesko, says that renovating the façade of K-market Woikantori was part of their long-term repair and maintenance plan. The new façade for the building was made by Ruukki.
“We chose a Ruukki façade at the suggestion of the designer because it was the one which was best aligned with our way of working,” explains Petri Bergman.
Promises are kept when professionals are involved
The building’s original cladding was also made of steel. Ismo Forsström of Colliers International Finland Oy, who acted as the investor’s consultant, says that a steel façade was also an excellent choice for the new cladding.
“It retained the character of the building and was also easy to install. Ruukki’s product suits Kesko’s current image and the colour conforms to Kesko’s environment guidelines,” says Ismo Forsström.
Ismo Forsström adds that one of the advantages of a steel façade is that it requires no future maintenance.
“Renovation of Woikantori’s façade went according to plan and within budget. In fact, the project was completed ahead of schedule. Ruukki’s network of partners, including fitters, did a professional job and it was precisely this professional approach to replacing the façade that decided our choice,” he says.
Elegance communicates high quality
Retailer Mari Paalanen-Taskinen is delighted with the result of the façade renovation and is pleased the decision was taken to modernise the building. The property now has a dignified, modern look.
“A store’s looks certainly impacts business. No matter how good the condition of the interior, if the exterior looks shabby, it gives the impression that not all is well with the store. If a store looks good from the outside, passing customers are more likely to step inside,” she explains.
Tarja, who works at K-Market Woikantori, describes the building’s new image as cheerful.
“When I’ve been at the checkout, I’ve heard many positive comments from customers. They’ve said the store has a new elegant look,” she says.
“Customers commended the building already during the renovation stage. They thought it was great that the improvements were not limited to just the interior of the building, but that also the exterior surfaces were smartened up. I’ve heard comments like “Wow, how nice”,” says a delighted retailer.
