Samsung Plant

Metal based solutions

High speed for modern equipment

It was required to erect four factory blocks in Vorsino technology park on a 47.2-hectare plot of land. The area for the factory itself amounted 38,000 m². In the future the area will be enlarged. It is planned to build a plastics moulding centre (7,000 m²), and also a logistics centre, which will occupy 52,000 m².

It was decided to use structural steel in the erection of all the buildings incorporating offices as well as production areas. The main complexity of the construction project was the extremely tight deadline from the project start (September 2007) to the first assembly line start-up (August 2008), less than a year.

In order to meet the planned schedule, Samsung decided to approach Ruukki European, a leading supplier of metal based solutions for the construction and engineering industries.

"We had to work on a triple-shift basis in order to meet the schedule."

For construction phase 1 Ruukki delivered more that 2,000 tonnes of operation compatible structural steel for erection of four separate, complete production buildings. The supply also included framework and wall enclosure structures (sandwich panels).

"Notwithstanding that the workshop buildings were not unique in terms of design, the main problem was the extremely tight deadline, which was not usual, even for us. In order to meet delivery schedules, we reorganised the work at our factory. Our staff worked on a triple-shift basis, and this allowed us to manufacture steel constructions right on time," says Leonid Lazutkin, Ruukki s Sales Director, Russia.

One more factor, which guaranteed construction speed, was the high quality of the structural steel. There were no difficulties in assembly and no adjustment was required. Moreover, optimal timeframes for assembly were possible, due to the main feature of the light-gauge structural steel, all junctions were bolted and no welding works were required.

"We guarantee quality and timing."

The speed of the construction works - achieved because of the pace and accuracy of Ruukki supplies, the high level of factory readiness and the simplicity of the construction details assembly - meant that phase 1 of the Samsung factory construction finished ahead of schedule in September 2008, not January 2009 as originally planned.

The factory is to achieve its maximum capacity level (approx. 2.2 mln. units per year) in 2010.

"Commissioning of the factory in no more than a year after laying of the first stone confirms a high level of professionalism of all the people who have been involved in the project implementation. This factory will allow our company to increase our share
in Russian TV set market by up to 25-30%," said Mr. Don Joo Lee, President of Head Quarter, Samsung Electronics CIS and Baltics.

"Participation in this project is a great honour for us. We understand how it is important for global brands to maintain international quality standards. Such an experience allows us to guarantee fulfillment of global concern requirements for materials quality, timing and the scope of supplies," commented Sergey Chernyshev, Ruukki's Sales Director.
