Ruukki UK Ltd have recently supplied materials for several innovative new projects in and around London. One of the latest notable projects is the long-awaited Cambridge Ice Rink Arena.

The quest to build an ice rink in Cambridge began in 1993, when former Cambridge University ice hockey player David Gattiker left a £1m bequest to the university for the purpose. However, the project has taken decades to be realised. After securing planning permission, donations, and a reputable team of suppliers and construction specialists, construction on Cambridge Ice Rink Arena is now underway.

Unfortunately, the completion work has been subjected to numerous set-backs outside of the project team’s control. Most recently, this included the discovery of a WWII incendiary device during a reduced level dig, just two days before scheduled project completion. Once the army and specialist contractors had completed the essential work to remove the device and secure the site, the dig could begin again. 

Despite the complications, Ruukki were able to complete our aspect of the work successfully and efficiently, supplying mineral wool panels: spanning horizontally with corner units. The panels in question were our efficient SPB200WE mineral wool panels, which included 24 corner units and flat sheets in RR44 for flashings. All panels were supplied in green coat HIARC RR44 Blue Metallic external colour (Micro Rib).

Cambridge Ice Rink Arena will incorporate the very latest advances in design and technology. The goal of the venue is to be an inclusive, community-lead initiative, where you can enjoy world-class facilities regardless of whether you are training, competing, spending time on the ice, or spectating. It is designed to be easy to access, with car parking and excellent public transport links, and set to provide facilities for all ages and abilities to enjoy. The rink itself will provide a home for Cambridge University's ice hockey teams, and will be able to accommodate up to 500 skaters at a time.
