BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the world's most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings.
 
BREEAM assesses buildings against the seven separate criteria and provides an overall score: Pass, Good, Very good, Excellent or Outstanding.

Breeam credits for energy

ENE 01
Energy efficiency
1-15 credits

In the BREEAM environmental certification system, a reference model is used for verifying the energy efficiency of the proposed building. The proposed solution is compared to the reference model which is formulated based on national norms. Ruukki provides an air tightness guarantee for the structure and ensures that the theoretical air tightness is also achieved in the completed structure.
 
Additionally, Ruukki carries out an energy calculation for the proposed building. An IDA-ICE 4.0 -based energy simulator is used, allowing Ruukki’s experts to determine the building’s energy consumption based on the actual designs used. As the energy simulation is carried out according to BREEAM’s requirements for energy simulation, Ruukki’s energy simulation provides a fairly accurate projection of a building’s BREEAM rating when it is submitted for certification. The energy simulation can also be used, with some limitations, to demonstrate that the building’s energy efficiency corresponds to the requirements of the BREEAM environmental certification.

Life cycle cost and service life planning

Ruukki gives recommendation for a product maintenance interval accordingly.
 
The BREEAM building envelope life cycle cost analysis must cover the costs of the energy panel’s production, use and disposal for a study period of 25 or 30 years and 60 years. The costs should be expressed both in real terms and discounted back to the present.

MAT 01
Life Cycle Impacts
1-6 credits

Ruukki provides LCA-data regularly. Environmental product declarations, EPDs, are available for Ruukki construction products. EPDs are verified by third party and they fulfill the requirements of international standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804. 

Ruukki Sandwich panels consist of two colour-coated steel sheets joined to a core of mineral wool (MW) or polyisocyanurate (PIR). The insulation materials used in Ruukki’s sandwich panels have received the top A+ or A ratings in the Green Guide Environmental Evaluation of Insulation Media.

MAT 03
Responsible sourcing of materials

The raw material used in the production of building components are hot-rolled steel coils and sheets manufactured at SSAB Raahe and Hämeenlinna Steel Works in Finland and manufactured into building components in various Ruukki´s facilities. All processes are ISO 14001 certified.

Steel used in frames is sometimes produced in Raahe and manufactured to frame components in Ruukki’s facilities. Both processes are ISO 14001 certified.  

The mineral wool used in Ruukki life panels is made of recycled glass and is therefore classified as glass wool in the Green Guide classification.

The insulation material providers have ISO 14001 certification.

Ruukki can give information before product delivery on used package materials. 

Ruukki provides a service for sandwich panel waste collection on site. For the moment, this service is available only in Finland.
