Tampereen Ratikka is to be built and implemented using an alliance model. An alliance is a collaborative model in which the client engages stakeholders, builders and designers at the earliest possible stage of the project. Tampereen Ratikka is Finland’s most modern public transport system. You’ll be able to hop on a tram in 2021.
After reviewing many different plans, Cor-Ten® steel, loved by many architects, was chosen for the facade of these buildings. The Tampere Building Supervision City Image Committee was conceived and designed by Aihio Arkkitehdit, led by Juha Ryösä.
We were involved in this unique project early in its development phase. Ruukki’s Cor-Ten® material, which blends into the environment and is honest and timeless, was an excellent choice for the power supply stations’ facades. The power supply stations are designed to look alike and to create an image of unity, making them easy to recognise as part of the tramline.
Tailored lamellas of different widths were vertically mounted; this created rhythm and a uniform surface for the buildings in a seamless wall and roof solution.
“After many changes in the design phase, the end result has been successful. The sympathetic buildings and their lively and timeless Cor-Ten® facades communicate the merging of the past with the modern environment,” says Juha Ryösä of Aihio Architects in Tampere.
“Ruukki was chosen as the material supplier because it is expert, neutral and easily approachable. You can always call them and ask for advice, and you’ll often get tips you may not have thought of as well,” Ryösä continues.
Ryösä considers Cor-Ten® a timeless, multifaceted and honest material. “I was already excited about the material in the 90s when I was planning the final course work for my studies, which remained incomplete even after my diploma work. In the 90s, the use of Cor-Ten® steel in facades was less common.”
Tampere’s Ratikka power supply stations were installed using Pirkanmaa’s installation technology. They were designed by Aihio Arkkitehdit from Tampere.
