1960s

1960
Rautaruukki Ltd is established.
1964
Iron production starts at the Raahe Steel Works.
1967
Production of steel and hot-rolled plate commences.
1968
The mining company Otanmäki Ltd is merged with Rautarukki.

1971
Completion of the hot-strip mill at the Raahe Steel Works.
1972
Production of cold-rolled and galvanised sheet commences in Hämeenlinna.
1973
Rautaruukki starts tube production in Hämeenlinna.
1975
Second blast furnace built at the Raahe Steel Works.
Acquisition of Oy Etnarör Ab’s tube works (Lappohja Works).
1976
Construction of the tube works in Oulainen.
1977
The expansion programme for basic production is completed.
Rautaruukki starts production of colour-coated sheets in Hämeenlinna.
First foreign acquisition: Nordisk Simplex A/S’s tube works in Denmark.
Sales company established in Norway (Finnstål A/S)
1979
Construction of the tube works in Pulkkila.
Acquisition dished end production of Matti Eloranta Oy (Halikko Works).
Acquisition of Tehdaspalkki Oy (Ylivieska Works).

1981
Establishment of sales company in Great Britain (Rautaruukki UK Ltd).

1982
1.7.1982 Mikko Kivimäki is appointed President and CEO of Rautaruukki Group.

1983
Acquisition of Toijalan Teräsprofiili Oy (Toijala Works).
Establishment of sales company in Germany (Rautaruukki Deutschland GmbH).

1985
Production of special railway carriages starts at Otanmäki.
Sales companies established in Sweden and the USA.

1987
Acquisition of Dalsbruk Oy Ab, a producer of long steel products.
Completion of first stage of the coking plant at the Raahe Steel Works.

1988
Acquisition of Suomen Metalcolor Oy, a producer of plastic-coating works (Kankaanpää Works).
Closure of Rautaruukki’s last operational mine, Rautuvaara.
The Group’s transport operations combined to form Oy JIT-Trans Ltd.

1989
Acquisition of CCB-Gruppen, a Norwegian steel wholesaler.
Acquisition of German tube works Schmacke Rohr GmbH.
Establishment of Stelform A/S, a producer of cold-formed sections in Denmark. Rautaruukki offers its first share issue to personnel and the general public.
Helsinki Exchanges start to quote Rautaruukki shares.

1990
Acquisition of Star Tubes (UK) Ltd, a British wholesaler of tubular products.
Acquisition of Gavle Ahlsell AB, a Swedish manufacturer of profiled sheet.
Acquisition of Wirsbo Stålrör AB, a Swedish tube works.
Minority holdings in steel wholesalers in Sweden, Germany and the USA.

1991
Rautaruukki and Valmet merge the production of railway carriages and establish Transtech Ltd.
Three Finnish manufacturers of profiled sheet, Verho-Metalli Oy, Mäkelä Metals Oy and Rannila Steel Oy join the Group.
Purchase of a 50% holding in Carl Froh Röhrenwerk GmbH&Co., a German tube works.

1992
Reorganization of the long products business in Scandinavia: Dalsbruk Oy Ab becomes part of Fundia AB, and Rautaruukki gains a 50% holding in Fundia.
Second stage of the coking plant is completed.
Sales company established in Singapore.
Manufacture of profiled sheet starts in Estonia.

1993
Sales companies established in Poland and Dubai.

1994
Carl Froh Röhrenwerk GmbH & Co. becomes wholly owned by Rautaruukki.
Manufacture of profiled sheet starts in Poland.
Rautaruukki acquires a steel service centre in Germany (Rautaruukki Stahlservice GmbH).
International share offering is carried out; the State’s holding is reduced to 68.7%.

1995
Oy Transtech Ltd becomes merged into Rautaruukki.
Sales companies established in Latvia and Lithuania.
Manufacture of profiled sheet starts in Russia.

1996
Fundia becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rautaruukki.
Acquisition of Keskometalli Oy, a Finnish steel wholesaler.
Rautaruukki sets up steel service centre for the whole Baltic Area.

1997
Rautaruukki starts the manufacture of profiled sheet in the Czech Republic.
International share offering is carried out, the State’s holding is reduced to 42.3%.
Rautaruukki starts a joint venture with VSZ in Slovakia to manufacture profiled sheet.
Rautaruukki holds international share issue and sale of shares.

1998
Rannila Steel starts the manufacture of profiled sheet in Ukraine and Lithuania.
The State’s holding is reduced to 41.8%.
Cold rolling capacity increased to 1,250,000 tonnes at the Hämeenlinna Works.
Transtech Taivalkoski Works sold.
Rautaruukki acquired 51% holding in Finnish steel service company Asva.

1999
Keskometalli is merged with Asva.
Transtech Otanmäki Works sold.
Valtameri is merged with Rautaruukki.
The State’s holding is reduced to 40.1 %.

2000
Investment programme Rautaruukki 2000 completed.
New galvanising plant starts in Hämeenlinna.


2001
Acquisition of Helens Stål AB, a Swedish stockholding and service centre company, renamed as Asva AB.
Production and service centre Stal Park opened in St Petersburg.
Rannila opens new factories for steel roofing in Ukraine and Poland.


2002
Fundia Cromax took over a hard-chrome plating company, Fluid SpA in Italy.
The Steel Structure Division opened new plants in Kazakhstan and in Yekaterinburg Central Russia.
Most of Rautaruukki Engineering´s operations to be transferred to Etteplan Oyj.
Rautaruukki Polska opens a Training and Technology Centre in Poland.
New rolling mill inaugurated at Fundia Nedstaal.


2003
Operations at Fundia Mandal (in Norway) to be closed down.
Rannila Slovakia transferred completely to Rautaruukki.
Change in the Rautaruukki Groups business model.
Reorganisation of Rautaruukki´s precision tube production (Nordsik Simplex A/S, Denmark).
Rautaruukki expands metal product operations in Norway.


2004
Sakari Tamminen is appointed President and CEO of Rautaruukki Group.
Rautaruukki Group purchases the business operations of TP-Teräskeskus Oy from the Finnish company TP-Yhtiöt.
Rautaruukki sells the Technology Sales unit, part of Rautaruukki Engineering, to the Austrian company Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbH&Co.
Rautaruukki sells Star Tubes (UK) Ltd, a precision tube wholesaler with operations in Great Britain, to the British wholesaler Barrett Steel Ltd.
Rautaruukki sells its welding wire operations to ESAB.
All the companies in the Rautaruukki Group will adopt a common marketing name, Ruukki.
Ruukki acquires Velsa Oy from Kone. Velsa is a leading manufacturer of cabins for mobile machines in the Nordic countries.


2005
Rautaruukki´s long steel products to Ovako.
Rautaruukki acquires Metalplast Oborniki in Poland.
Rautaruukki sells Froh House Tech.
Rautaruukki acquires Syneco Industri AB.
Rautaruukki sells Halikko Works business operations.
Rautaruukki acquires Slovakia's leading steel constructor Steel-Mont.
Ruukki builds new plant in Hungary.


2006
Rautaruukki completes the acquisition of PPTH.
Rautaruukki purchases colour-coating line in Ukraine.
Rautaruukki acquires leading Russian steel constructor Ventall.
Rautaruukki acquires AZST-Kolor CJSC.
Rautaruukki sells the operations of Duisburg service centre.
Rautaruukki divests its Nordic reinforcing steel besiness.
Rautaruukki to acquire AB Omeo Mekaniska Verkstad in Sweden.


2007
Ruukki extends its construction production in Ukraine.
Rautaruukki and LKAB conclude a long-term raw material supply contract.
Rautaruukki acquires Norwegian steel bridge supplier Scanbridge.
Rautaruukki develops production of frame structures for bridges and building construction in Finland.
Rautaruukki acquires Aprítógépgyár Zrt in Hungary.
Establishment of a sales office in Sofia, Bulgaria.
First production lines started at Rautaruukki's new plant in Romania
Rautaruukki sells remaining reinforcing steel units.
Rautaruukki won dispute concerning use of name Ruukki.


2008
Rautaruukki to build a new sandwich panel plant in Finland.
Rautaruukki moves forward as a supplier of LHT equipment through acquisition of Wolter Metallverar-beitung GmbH in Germany.
Rautaruukki acquires Hybri-Steel Oy and strengthens special product expertise in laser and laser-hybrid welding
Sale of Carl Froh GmbH to the German company Arques Industries AG.
Rautaruukki expands eastwards: new sales office in Kazakhstan
Rautaruukki continues expansion eastwards: new sales office in Belarus
Rautaruukki divests its colour-coating line in Gävle, Sweden to the Swedish company Trelleborg Rubore AB.
Rautaruukki to acquire Lithuanian steel frame company UAB Gensina

2009
Rautaruukki to acquire Norwegian steel frame constructor Skalles Eiendomsselskap AS
Rautaruukki to make its steel business more efficient: manufacture of steel products to be merged with Ruukki Metals
