Rails W230/4, W230/5 and W150/3

W230/4 is the most common rail type in use in Finland. When special protection of structures, such as bridge piers and portals, along thoroughfares is deemed necessary, the W230/5 rail with posts spaced at 2 metres is a good choice.

Standard roadside rails W230/4 and W230/5 are delivered perforated and hot dip galvanised with fasteners. Cut-to-size rails with the desired hole spacing as well as ungalvanised rails – perforated or unperforated – are also available to order.

The standard delivery lengths of type W230 are 4, 8 and 12 metres, and the standard post spacing is 4 metres, with corresponding perforations in the rail.

The light-traffic rail W150/3 is delivered hot dip galvanised and with holes for extension joints at both ends, but without fasteners.The U-profile tie plates, to be used with the extension points, are also available to order. The standard delivery lengths of type W150 are 6, 8 or 12 metres.

Rail W306/3

W306/3 is a rail type commonly used in Europe. W306/3 rails are delivered perforated and hot dip galvanised with accessories and fasteners. The rails can also be delivered cut-to-size and with the desired hole spacing as well as ungalvanised or unperforated.

The standard delivery length of rail type W306 is 4.3 metres, but 12.3 metre sections are also available.

The rails are perforated for 1.33, 2 and 4 metre post spacings. The end rails are also delivered perforated.

Rail CC 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4

Ruukki’s box beam C 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4 rail, used as median barrier, may also be installed to the side of the post, for instance, to protect roadside structures when working width is limited.

The barrier is delivered perforated and hot dip galvanised with components. Cut-to-size barriers with the desired hole spacing as well as ungalvanised and unperforated barriers are also available based on separate agreement.

The standard delivery length of the C 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4 rail is 12 metres, and the standard post spacing is 2 metres, with corresponding perforations in the rail.

Curved sections

W-rails can also be delivered bent. The smallest possible bending radius of curved sections is 350 mm; the bending radius of longer rail profiles are agreed upon order. Rail type W230/4 comes with optional 45° and 90° stocked curved sections. Rail W150/3 comes with optional 90° stocked curved sections. Rail W150/3 comes with optional 90° stocked curved sections. Additional information about the possibility of manufacturing sections with other bending radius is available from technical support and sales.

Inner and outer curves are defined on the basis of the direction of travel of vehicles as shown in the picture below.

Posts U50/100/50 x 5 and U50/100/50 x 4

Profile U50/100/50 x 5 is used as posts for rails W230/4 and W230/5. Profile U50/100/50 x 4 is used as posts for rail type W150/3. The post has holes for fasteners at both ends on the same side. The standard delivery lengths of post U100x50/5 are 1.1, 1.8 and 2.2 metres. The standard delivery length of post U50/100/50 x 4 is 1.5 metres.

Standard post spacing is 4 metres. If narrower working width is required of the rail, two metre post spacing is used.

Post SIGMA55/100/55 x 4

SIGMA55/100/55 x 4 profile is used as post material for road rail W306/3 and C 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4. The post has holes for fasteners at both ends on the same side.

The standard delivery lengths are 1.8 metre for rail C150x180/4 and 1.95 metre for rail W306/3. Standard post spacings are 2 metres for rail C 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4 and 1.33, 2 and 4 metres for rail W306/3.

Durability

Safety barriers, accessories and fasteners are delivered hot dip galvanised. The thickness of Ruukki´s safety barriers’ zinc layer exceeds the requirements of Standard EN ISO 1461 and fulfils those set in the type drawings of the Finnish Transport Agency. Ruukki’s safety barriers have proven their durability over several decades along traffic lanes treated with de-icing salt.

A hot dip galvanised surface can be painted to make it the desired colour and to extend its service life. Standard PSK 2702 and the SILKO 2.354 repair guideline of the Finnish Transport Agency provide detailed instructions for the painting of hot dip galvanised objects.

Ruukki’s side rails W230/4, W230/5 and C 33.5/150/280/150/33.5 x 4 also meet the requirements of the most demanding Class 4 for snow-plough resistance set by the Finnish Transport Agency.

Order & delivery

A delivery may consist of an installation-ready rail system or a more limited set of components. Rail systems include rails, rail posts as well as starting and end pieces, curved and corner sections and fasteners.

Rails and posts are manufactured on a continuous roll forming line, which ensures their high dimensional accuracy and allows for long section lengths.
