Installation
The modular structure of Ruukki’s noise barrier system is an advantage in scheduling. System components delivered from the factory have high dimensional accuracy and are ready for installation. The installation of a single noise barrier cassette takes only a few minutes.
Foundations made with driven or drilled steel pipe piles also shorten installation time and reduce installation costs considerably. The foundation usually requires no pouring of concrete, as columns are attached directly to piles with adjustable bolts. Noise barriers can also be mounted to bridges by chemical anchor bolts.
Necessary accessories such as doors, glass structures, safety cables, earthing components and decorations can also be mounted on the noise barrier with ease. Most often they can be installed with bolt or screw joints without on-site welding.
Sustainability
Ruukki’s noise barriers are designed and manufactured to endure harsh conditions. Noise barriers are made of high quality components. The main material is steel, which provides good overall economy and is durable, formable and light in relation to its strength.
Column and plinth structures are usually made of hot-dip galvanised steel components. The raw material is steel with a silicon content of 0.15–0.25%, in which case the layer thickness requirements of EN ISO 1461 are exceeded. This ensures extremely high corrosion resistance also in demanding roadside applications. The zinc layer protects the parapet not only against weather stresses but also against mechanical stresses from snow ploughs, etc. If necessary, the hot-dip galvanised surface can also be painted – such duplex treatment allows very long maintenance intervals.
The high corrosion resistance of the hot galvanised and painted thin steel sheet of cassettes is based on the combined effect of zinc and the paint coat: the ability of this combination to protect a steel sheet against corrosion is much better than that of either coating alone.
The surface materials of the cassettes are highly resistant to corrosion and UV radiation.
Easy maintenance
Dirt does not easily adhere to the coating of the noise barrier cassette, and no special cleaning is required. Most common spray paints can be removed with a water soluble detergent. If necessary, cassettes can be replaced easily and, owing to their light weight, no heavy machinery is needed.
Recyclability
The pile, frame and cassette material can be recycled after their service life and used as raw material for new steel. The polyester wool used as absorbing material is also recyclable.
Because of their modular structure, noise barrier cassettes can be easily moved and reassembled; for example, for temporary use at motor racing tracks.
