Wind power from land and sea

Ruukki wind towerWind power is one of the most competitive ways of generating renewable energy. Ruukki has already been successfully supplying materials for turbine towers and components for nacelles to wind power companies for a number of years.

“Ruukki Engineering supplies parts and components to turbine manufacturers and energy companies around the world. Investments in the business will grow at about 25 per cent a year worldwide,” says Ruukki’s wind turbine expert, Director, Energy Sales, Ari Färm.

There are around a dozen different types of component in production for the Asian and European markets. In addition, Ruukki delivers foundations for wind turbines.

“There are plans to build pilot towers both on the coast and inland,” Färm says.

Denmark shows the way in wind power

Today, wind power provides 21 percent of Denmark’s energy needs, a higher proportion than in any other country. Horns Rev (Horns Reef), one of the world’s largest wind farms, was installed in a shallow area of the North Sea off the western coast of Denmark back in 2002. One of the shareholders in Horns Rev is Swedish energy company Vattenfall, which is one of Ruukki’s customers for wind turbine parts and components.

“We have every confidence in wind power,” says Vattenfall’s wind power expert Thomas Stalin. However, he adds that more cost-effective solutions are required if wind power is to be made more use of elsewhere than in the windiest areas. Vattenfall and Ruukki are carrying out development work together on this front.
